A desk that stops

1 min A dual-motor standing frame under a butcher-block top from Menards. The memory buttons stop it dead. I am still sitting at it.

I bought a standing-desk frame after a long comparison of the alternatives, and then wrote a review of it that reads like someone who had spent too many hours on the comparison. Dual motors, over 250 pounds of lift, three-tier legs with more than 50 inches of reach, a width that ran from under 42 inches to over 70, quiet, and reasonably priced. On top of it I put a butcher-block slab, 25 by 45 inches and an inch and a half thick, for $99 at Menards. The desk was rock solid, and I wrote that my peers already envied it.

The one thing I marked it down for is still true. Moving it from the control panel, it starts and stops smoothly. Moving it with a memory button, it does not slow down at the end; it just stops. It does not affect me much. The instructions did not quite match the hardware either, though everything needed was in the box. I gave it nine out of ten and said it was too nice everywhere else to round down.

Seven years later I am writing this at that desk.
